Question of The Day: What color is a polar bear’s fur?
– Pale yellow
Answer: A polar bear’s hair is actually colorless and transparent. It only looks white because the air spaces in each hair shaft scatter the light. When an object reflects all of the visible wavelengths of light, our eyes see the color white. The thinner hairs that form the bear’s lush undercoat are not hollow, but they are also colorless like the guard hairs. At one time, scientists thought polar bear hair had the same properties as optic fibers, but further investigation showed this was not the case. Source: LOC.gov
